Jen and James' countryside engagement session
I've known Jen and James for years and was very excited when they asked me to photograph their wedding in September. To help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera on their wedding day and to take away the daunting feeling on the day they decided they wanted an engagement session.
We arranged for the summer to make sure we got some nice weather, and landing smack bang in the middle of a heatwave we couldn't have asked for me. We met early on a Sunday morning, to avoid ridiculous temperatures and harsh sunlight, in the village of Berkswell. This is quite a regular walking route for the two for an evening at the pub so I was very much following their lead.
Walking from the back of The Bear car park there's an alley that leads to an absolutely amazing corn field. Now anyone who has worked with me will be well aware of my love of a wheat field, I can't explain I just think they make incredible photographs, but I think now cornfields are my favourite. The lush green with natural walkways between created some gorgeous depth and colour to the photographs and the gnarly trees in the field provided some great shade to get balance for the photographs.
These two are just naturals so had no reason to be nervy at all! Using the gorgeous field and them just being adorable has lead to some of my favourite engagement shots I've taken. They both naturally light up the second they look at each other and there's always a little smile whenever they are close to each other which just makes 'posing' so much easier.
I use the word posing as loosely as possible, it conjures ideas of having directions shouted at you to be a contortionist rather than being yourself. For me it's more about getting a couple to feel comfortable with being intimate and natural around me and Jen and James had no problems with this at all!
I cannot wait for their wedding in September now to spend more time with this pair of wonderful people and getting to use the grounds at the beautiful Hampton Manor for their portraits is going to be a bonus!
